Brazilian visual artist Yara Tupynambá Gordilho Santos was born in April 2, 1932 in Monte Claros.
Tupynambá began her career studying under Brazilian artists such as Alberto Guignard and Oswaldo Goeldi. Later on, in life her studies brought her to the Pratt Institute in New York City.
Her works are well known in her hometown of Brazil, her works can be found in the 'Sala Especial' (Special Room) at São Paulo Art Biennial.
Yara Tupynambá was also a fine art teacher/professor at the UFMG, one of Brazil's main university campuses where she helped create the Fine Arts Institute.
Tupynambá exhibits her works in all the main art locations across Brazil: Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Brasília, Paraná, Porto Alegre, Campinas, Ouro Preto and Pernambuco.
