"Never design anything that cannot be made." - Jean Prouvé

A featured favourite from our Fine Sale this November was Lot 301 (Selling for £1000) a set of stools with simple and linear shape, capable of summarizing aesthetics and essentialism in a highly effective whole.  Jean Prouvé’s interpretation of this classic type is distinguished by its simple, unpretentious appearance, lucid construction and harmonious proportions. The robust structure of the classic Tabouret Haut bar stool by Jean Prouvé, comes in natural or dark solid oak, making it ideally suited for use in bars and cafeterias. The chrome-plated steel ring guarantees stability and also serves as a comfortable footrest with an anti-skid surface.

Jean Prouvé completed his training as a metal artisan before opening his own workshop in Nancy in 1924. In the following years he created numerous furniture designs, and in 1947 Prouvé established his own factory. In close cooperation with the Prouvé family, Vitra began in 2002 to issue re-editions of designs by this great French constructeur.

Prouvé's work is included in private and public collections worldwide, including Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Permanent galleries devoted to Prouvé's work have been installed at the Musée des beaux-arts and Musée de l’Histoire du Fer in Nancy. In 2012, there were an exhibition of his ironwork at Musée de l’École de Nancy, an analysis of his impact on the city during and after World War II at Musée Lorrain and the installation of one of the prefabricated Maisons Tropicales he designed for use in Africa at Musée des beaux-arts. – Vitra, About Jean Prouvé
