Frederic Whiting

Planning for a staycation within the UK..? Why not head to the Scottish coast or the Highlands, to find some relief from the London heat.

Presented in our upcoming Fine Sale are two watercolours by the English painter Frederic Whiting RP RSW RI, depicting Scottish locations.

Whiting was London born and educated, having attended St Mark's College in Chelsea, and the Royal Academy Schools; he later studied art at Académie Julian in Paris.

He went on to teach at Heatherley School of Fine Art in Chelsea, while also working for 'The Graphic' as war correspondent, covering the Chinese and Russo-Japanese War between 1904 and 1905.

A widely travelled painter, he was mainly sought after for his portraits – he became a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1914 – and his watercolours, becoming also a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1918, and of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colour.

Not a new name at Lots Road Auctions, where one of his portraits previously sold for £1400 (incl. buyer’s comm), the present works are:
