Sol Fruit Bowl by Ettore Sottsass

Lot 6
Sol Fruit Bowl by Ettore Sottsass, 1982. Memphis Milano art glass, bearing an inscription to base, 28cm D x 28cm H.

A highlight of our upcoming Fine Sale on the 13th of June is this one of a kind glass bowl designed by one of the more distinctive Italian designers of the 20th Century, Ettore Sottsass. Ambiguous in design, functional and playful, the bowl is distinctively Sottsass.

An architect and designer, Sottsass produced works including furniture, jewellery, glass, lighting and office design. He is known for being the co-founder of the Memphis Group design collective of the 1980s, which was born when a group of designers came together in Sottsass' Milan flat. The Memphis style became about expanding the meaning of style and was not satisfied with what had been done, but rather, what could be done. The concepts and attitudes became a leading force and inspiration in the design world of the 1980s and beyond.

Sottsass' works are held in collections in the MoMA in New York, the MET, the Centre Pompidou and the V&A Museum.
