Not Your Everyday Wine Labels

At our last sale of 2017 this Sunday the 17th of December we have lots 101 and 102  which are great examples of the marriage between wine and art established by Barron Philippe Rothschild in 1945. Since that year art from various contemporary artists has graced the labels of the famous Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

Lot 102 is by Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) who was one of the leading contemporary artists of the latter half of the 20th century and early 21st century. Born in Barcelona, Tàpies was primarily a painter and sculptor who would adopt many different styles over his career. This label has hearts, a nose, an eye and a mouth, which alludes to the sensory delights about to be experienced by the wine drinker.

Lot 101 is a label by Jeff Koons, traditionally better known for his sculptures, who has here added a silver drawing over the famous fresco from Pompeii of Venus on a seashell. Koons was born in York, Pennsylvania, and eventually moved to New York City. It is here that he became a major recognised artist and for a time commanded some of the highest prices of art sold at auction by a living artist.
