Coming up in our Fine Auction 6th November we will be offering this a 19th century Milanese inlayed centre table (lot 175).

(See image to the left).

In the arabesque style, with fine workmanship throughout, inlayed with bone, silver metal, ivory and Mother of Pearl. The extensive ornamentation is centred on a pictoral panel after one of the great French classical painters, Alexandre Cabanel and through contemporary records it has been suggested that the table was in ownership of the artist, in situ in his personal studio.

Cabanel was renowned to have been inspired by Eastern, Arabic culture and classical art. It is possible that the artist may have commissioned this table with the impending success of the exhibition of the original painting Thamar at the Salon de 1878.
