If this is your first time, we have explained below the different ways you can buy at Lots Road Auctions, we hope you find it helpful.

Droit de Suite
Lots Road Auctions will implement the Artists Resale Right royalty as follows:
Lots Road Auctions will collect the royalty from the buyer for any works of art covered by the royalty (see Buying at Lots Road for full details)

In Person
If you wish to bid in person and attend a sale you will need to register first. Sales can get very busy so please allow yourself sufficient time before the sale to register as a bidder. At reception, you will be asked to fill in a registration form to give your name and address, contact numbers, show a valid credit/debit card or leave a cash deposit. You will not need to fill in a form again on your second visit, simply give your name at reception. Once the form is completed you will receive a paddle – a card printed with your personal number for that sale.

During the sale, simply raise your paddle when you wish to bid and wait for the auctioneer to acknowledge you. Other bidders may wish to bid on the same lot, they will bid against you in the same way. The auctioneer will continue taking bids from each bidder until all but one drops out. The last bidder is the successful buyer and the auctioneer indicates that the lot is sold by knocking down his hammer on the rostrum and announcing the buyer’s number and hammer price.

A representative from Callaghan & Newbury is available on the premises, on the day of the sale.

Absentee: ‘Commission Bid’
You may want to leave a ‘commission bid’ if you cannot attend the sale. We will try to secure the item/s for you at the lowest price possible.

If we receive two bids of equal value, preference is given to the bid that arrives first, so why not leave an amount that does not end with a zero or five e.g. £203 instead of £200).

Alternatively, if your bid price is flexible use a maximum of 3 + signs for each 10% increment (i.e. £300+ equals £330, and £300++ equals £360 approx. ).

A lot will not be sold for less than 50% of the highest 'commission bid'.

Simply print out the Absentee Bidding form, fill in your details, lot number and description and indicate maximum bid amount, and fax it back to us, prior to the sale on: 020 7376 6899.

Please note, Lots Road Auctions does not accept and will not execute commission bids left via email. Faxed and signed forms only will be accepted.

We will try to contact you on the sale day, if you are successful with commission bid(s).

If you are planning on collecting, any successful commission bid items on the sale day, you may wish to phone us, to find out if you have been successful.

Telephone Bid
An auction clerk calls you and he relays your bids to the auctioneer during the bidding of your lot.

Telephone bids are reserved for lots with a minimum estimate of £500 (we can take up to 5 live telephone bids per lot, so book it early). Please supply us with a telephone number you wish to be contacted on and a member of staff will call you 5 lots prior to your lot.

Telephone lines are never 100% reliable, and we ask our telephone bidders to provide us with a cover bid, a pre-arranged bid amount that a member of staff may execute on behalf of a telephone bidder in the event he cannot be reached.
